Adventica Chișinău: When Less Space Leads to Smarter Interactive Design

Limited space became a design advantage at Adventica Chișinău, where CTRL+N adapted interactive attractions to columns, walls, walkways and compact areas.

Not  every venue gives you a large empty floor to work with. Sometimes, the most  interesting projects are the ones where every installation has to be  carefully considered.

Adventica Chișinău was exactly that kind of project.

‍

Instead of asking how many attractions could fit into the park, we focused  on a different question: how can the available space be used to create as  many engaging experiences as possible?    That meant rethinking some of the standard solutions.

‍

With limited room for a conventional Bike Track, we opted for a Hand Bike  Race. It keeps the excitement of competitive racing while taking up  considerably less space.    A structural column presented another unusual design challenge. Located in  the area planned for the Running Race, the one-metre-wide column could easily  have been seen as something to work around. Instead, we incorporated it into  the solution and adapted the attraction to the existing architecture.

‍

There was also an otherwise overlooked wall close to the restrooms. We  turned it into an interactive feature by creating Lines - a custom attraction  developed specifically for this location.    Even areas people simply pass through became part of the experience. A  Button Challenge was built into the base of the trampoline zone along a busy  walkway, creating an unexpected opportunity for visitors to stop and play.    And these aren't the only interactive elements in the park.    Adventica Chișinău also includes a custom Ball Zone, Big and Small  Challenge Tables, the musical Magic Flowers installation, and The Star for  younger children - creating different types of interaction across the park  and for different age groups.

‍

This project is a good example of why interactive design shouldn't start  with a catalogue of attractions.    It should start with the space itself.    The architecture, the traffic flow, the available surfaces, and even the  obstacles can all become part of the solution.    At CTRL+N, we create technology around the venue's possibilities -  designing each installation to work with the space rather than forcing the  space to work around the technology.
